Once known as Formosa, the island of Taiwan lies about 100 miles off the south coast of mainland China. When Chiang Kai-shek and the Nationalists were driven from China in 1949, he established Taipei as the capital of the Republic of China. Although Taiwan has few natural resources, through education and hard work, the Taiwanese people have created an economic miracle in the past 40 years and this small island has become known around the world. Today 5,000 year old cultural traditions — festivals, art, music, religion — continue alongside the modern high tech industries-manufacturing, electronics, communication-which have replaced agriculture as the major export of Taiwan. Taiwan offers the visitor a variety of delights — mountains, seashore, and an endless variety of tropical plants and fruits.
